Student Travel Grants

Support is available to help cover the expenses for US-based students and 2-3 students from international institutions.

We encourage applications from students from a wide variety of institutions, diverse backgrounds, and first time attendees. Undergraduate and graduate students will be considered. An application for a travel award will consist of the student's resume, a statement from the student, and a letter from the student's research advisor. The advisor should include justification of financial need. The student's statement should include a summary of research interests, a statement of why the applicant will benefit from participating in the symposium, and how the applicant can contribute to the symposium through service or technical contribution.

The amount of support provided to US students will be up to $1000 of documented expenses. The amount of support for international students will be up to $1500 of documented expenses.

Applications are due by April 5, and recipients will be notified by April 12 in order to be eligible for early registration, which closes April 19. Send applications and advisor's letter (email suffices) to:


The Claremont is easily accessible through three airports, San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. Driving directions to the Claremont are given for San Francisco and Oakland. If you are driving from San Jose, leave San Jose airport and head to Oakland. Once in/near Oakland, follow the driving directions given.

If you prefer not to drive, there are several options available, including taxis and the ever popular BayPorter shuttle. Please contact the Claremont Resort for further information. BART also offers service between Oakland/Berkeley and the San Francisco airport (directly) and the Oakland airport (with a shuttle).

Hotel Information

The Symposium will be held in its traditional location at the Claremont Resort, in Berkeley, California, "one of the few hotels in the world with warmth, character and charm" according to Frank Lloyd Wright.

A block of rooms has been put aside for Symposium attendees. The rate below does not include sales/room tax 14.065%. The hotel will provide parking at the rate of $24, plus any applicable taxes, per vehicle per day for overnight guests of the Symposium. This fee includes valet service and unlimited in and out privileges. A day parking charge is available at $12 per vehicle per day for guests of the Symposium who do not have overnight accommodations.

Hillside or Bayview Single/Double rooms ($225/night)

To receive this special group rate, you must say you are part of the "IEEE Group" and make your reservation by calling in-house reservations phone 1-800-551-7266 or +1 510-843-3000.

The reservation cut-off date is Friday, April 29, 2011 at 5:00pm Pacific Time. Reservations received after this date will be accepted by the hotel on a space available basis.

Specify the room type you would like when making your reservation. Please note that rooms are limited availability, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Hotel does not require a deposit in advance; though a credit card is needed to reserve a room.

Government rate: There are no more government-rate rooms available under our room block. The following information is available just for reference.

10% of the rooms in the group room block are available on a first-come first-serve basis at a rate of $94 per night. Guests of the Symposium requesting the government rate must present a valid form of identification at the time of check-in, detailed below.

To receive a U.S. Federal Government per diem rate, guests must present one of the following forms of identification:

  • Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) ID
  • U.S. Federal Government issued Visa, MasterCard or American Express Card (i.e. SmartPay Credit Card)
  • Personnel badge or ID issued to U.S. Federal Government civilian employees
  • U.S. Military ID issued to U.S. Military Personnel on Official Travel
  • Common Access Card (CAC) issued to U.S. Federal Government civilian employees and U.S. Military Personnel on Official Travel
  • Official Government/Military Travel Orders/Proof of Official Duty Status

To receive a State and Local Government per diem rate, guests must present one of the following forms of identification:

  • Official travel orders on original state or local government letterhead
  • State or local government issued personnel badge or ID card

Ethics Workshop Cancelled
The "Community Workshop on Ethical Guidelines for Security Research" has been cancelled. Those who registered will receive a full refund. The other workshops remain open and available.

We are soliciting short talks (5 minutes) that present preliminary research results or summaries of emerging topics to the Oakland community.
