Student Travel Grants

Support is available to help cover the expenses for US-based students and 2-3 students from international institutions.

We encourage applications from students from a wide variety of institutions, diverse backgrounds, and first time attendees. Undergraduate and graduate students will be considered. An application for a travel award will consist of the student's resume, a statement from the student, and a letter from the student's research advisor. The advisor should include justification of financial need. The student's statement should include a summary of research interests, a statement of why the applicant will benefit from participating in the symposium, and how the applicant can contribute to the symposium through service or technical contribution.

The amount of support provided to US students will be up to $1000 of documented expenses. The amount of support for international students will be up to $1500 of documented expenses.

Applications are due by April 8 (extended), and recipients will be notified in time to be eligible for early registration, which closes April 20 (Register). Send applications and advisor's letter (email suffices) to: travel@ieee-security.org.

Support is also available for students attending the workshops. Please see the SPW travel page for more details.

Visas

Before requesting visa letters, you must register for the conference through this web site. Contact information will be available during the registration.

Travel

The easiest way to get to the conference and around the Bay Area is the extensive public transportation system. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) works well for getting into downtown San Francisco. The conference hotel is just a few blocks from the Powell St stop. There is also a cable car stop on Powell St right outside the hotel, and there are a number of nearby bus and light rail stops.

From SFO Airport to the Westin St. Francis

Public Transit: From the terminal follow signs to BART. BART is adjacent to the International Terminal. From the Domestic Terminal it is about a 10 minute walk depending on which gate you are coming from or you may ride the AirTrain which is a free service. You will need to purchase an $8.25 ticket for BART. Board a Pittsburg/Bay Point-bound train and get off at Powell St., which is the 10th stop from SFO. The train ride from station to station is approximate 30 minutes. There is a 4 block walk (5-8 minutes) from Powell St. Station to Westin St. Francis Hotel, located at 335 Powell St./Geary St.. Please visit www.bart.gov for a complete list of time schedules.

Taxi: From the terminal follow the signs to Ground Transportation. From there, follow the signs for TAXIS. The fare for taxi service between the airport and the St. Francis Hotel is approximately $45 and the travel time is approximately 30 minutes. Both are dependent on traffic, time of day and day of the week.

Super Shuttle: Follow the signs for DOOR TO DOOR SHUTTLES from the terminal to the 2nd level, which is one level up from baggage claim. From there, proceed to the Center Island Transportation Zones where the blue shuttles with yellow wait. The cost of the shuttle is $17.00 per person and it takes approximately 45 minutes to get from the airport to the hotel. The shuttle is a shared ride - it is not direct. You may also charter a private shuttle for up to 9 passengers for $75.00.

From SFO Airport to the Westin San Francisco Airport

There is a free shuttle to and from the Westin San Francisco Airport and the airport itself. Please contact the hotel for more information.
