Editor Bob Bruen, Book Review Editor ==================================================================== Contents: [180 lines total] o Note from the Editor o Call for Papers: Information Survivability Workshop o Calendar ==================================================================== Dear Cipher Reader, As you may have noticed, the calendar section distributed in the last e-mailed Cipher (EI#18, 11 November 1996) was slightly out-of-date; my apologies for this oversight. In addition, one call for papers was omitted that I think will be of interest to many of you, and it has a closing date for submissions of 27 November. Since that is before the next regular issue will be mailed. I thought it worth the effort to redistribute the calendar and this call for papers now, since otherwise you would not receive them until after the planned deadline. Let me also take this opportunity to encourage you to submit your contributions for the Oakland Symposium; these are due December 2. Sincerely, Carl Landwehr Editor, Cipher ______________________________________________________________________ Call for Papers ______________________________________________________________________ Information Survivability Workshop February 12-13, 1997 San Diego, California Organized by CERT Coordination Center , Software Engineering Institute Sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Program Co-Chairs: Thomas A. Longstaff, SEI; Howard F. Lipson, SEI The Software Engineering Institute is organizing a workshop on Information Survivability, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, and we would like to invite your participation. Information survivability (IS) has become a new area of concern for DARPA and others in the research community. IS is more than security, more than safety, more than fault tolerance, but is a combination of quality attributes that assures that even during a successful attack, the mission of the network, software, or service will continue. The goal of the Information Survivability workshop will be to clearly define the issues associated with IS, and identify the research areas that are likely to contribute to this area. A white paper will be created that will also suggest areas of IS research that are in need of more attention from the research community. We encourage participation of people with diverse backgrounds and interests including, but not limited to, researchers, practitioners, research sponsors, and buyers. The workshop will begin to define a community of interest in the area of IS that can continue to collaborate and share results to the benefit of the entire community. Attendance at the workshop will be limited to 50 participants. Each participant must submit a short position paper (no more than 2 pages) suggesting how their background or interests would contribute to the emerging area of IS. All accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings however, only a limited number of papers will be presented. Submitting a position paper Position papers must be submitted by electronic mail. Acceptable formats are ASCII, HTML, or MIME-compliant attachments of Word, Framemaker, or Powerpoint documents. Mail your submission to survivable-systems@cert.org. Additional information will be posted periodically in the workshop home page: http://www.cert.org/research/isw97.html For further information on the topic, see the editorial message in the November issue of COMPUTER. For instructions on how to submit a position statement please access the workshop home page: http://www.cert.org/research/isw97.html Deadline for submissions: November 27, 1996 When: February 12-13, 1997 Where: San Diego, California ______________________________________________________________________ Calendar ______________________________________________________________________ Calendar of security and privacy related events Updated 20 November 1996 Date (Month/Day/Year), Event, Locations, e-mail for more info.
